Fair Fashion – Was bedeutet das für Mama Nuka?

Fair Fashion – What does that mean for Mama Nuka?

When we buy clothes for our little ones, we have certain expectations of the textiles: they should be free of harmful substances, soft and, ideally, pretty . With these considerations in mind, we often turn to so-called fair fashion items. But what does that actually mean?
Fair fashion can be broken down into the terms 'fair' and 'fashion' and means the production of fair clothing . It is manufactured using environmentally friendly materials and production processes, which minimizes the negative impact on nature. At the same time, they also guarantee compliance with social standards and improve working conditions in the textile industry. The special thing is that products have gone through a fair supply chain from the cotton plant to the end consumer.
For us at Mama Nuka, this means that our products are fair to our environment, our employees and our buyers. In this blog article, we will explain the concept using one of our Mama Nuka slings:
  1. Our organic cotton is grown in South India without any pesticides or insecticides.
This form of agriculture is better for the environment and the cotton produced is particularly gentle on sensitive baby skin. With us you can be sure that our cotton is free from harmful and allergy-causing chemicals.
  2. The cotton plants are harvested and the cotton clouds are transported to a small family business in Ahmedabad, the capital of Gujarat. This is the only transport route used in India, so we can guarantee that the carbon footprint of our products is almost as small as your baby's feet.
  3. A fine, thin yarn is spun from the cotton plants, which allows the sling to fit particularly well on the baby's small body. All further production steps now take place under one roof - fair pay for our employees is a matter of course for us!
  4. The soft yarn is dyed by hand using different plants. This dyeing technique is environmentally friendly because, unlike conventional textile production, it does not use a variety of chemical agents, but only plant-based substances (such as pomegranate seeds). This is how our beautiful colors are created, which will not cause skin irritation or allergic reactions. Yarn dyed for Mama Nuka in India
  5. The colorful yarn is then hand-woven into a large length of fabric using a traditional loom. The diamond twill and herringbone weaves we use are diagonally elastic, meaning they can stretch in all directions and therefore cannot stretch out on one side. Manual weaving means that each piece of fabric is unique, and your baby will feel safe and secure in it later on.
  6. The freshly woven fabrics are washed so that the yarns can bond together and the colors can settle. The fabrics are then dried in the sun on high bamboo frames, which is more environmentally friendly and makes the colors shine.
  7. The ends of the fabrics are sewn together, and our Mama Nuka unique pieces are born. The different colors of the long sides mean you can see straight away where the top and bottom of the cloth are. The Mama Nuka flower in the middle helps you orient yourself when tying.

  8. The Mama Nuka cloths are cut out of the large piece of fabric in a trapezoidal shape; the two tapered ends will make it easier for you to tie them later.

  9. The slings are washed one last time. Here, too, we rely on plant power: instead of chemical agents, we use Indian soap nuts. By using these, the water bath can then be used to water the dye plants, thus creating an environmentally friendly water cycle.

  10. The finished cloths are shipped to Germany in large packages and wait for their final destination in our Berlin warehouse. Perhaps you too will soon give one of our unique pieces a home?
